A move back home during the pandemic—not uncommon now as people struggle with loneliness or paying rent—can crank up the intensity even more, especially if you're working and unable to break away to see friends. The underlying uncertainty about how long you might be home and stress about health issues only increase the strain.

If tensions start to build, it's important to try to find some positives. Returning to your family home, especially if it's the house you grew up in, can provide a dose of security in uncertain times; we need to feel not just an absence of danger, but comfort. Whether that's eating Mom's chicken soup or sleeping in your childhood bed, any familiarity will offer a sense of wellbeing.
But don't be ashamed if you revert to teenage tendencies, Maddox says. Those smells and objects that act like a comfort blanket can also evoke negative feelings. Before you know it, you may be reliving the sense of deep injustice you felt as a 12-year-old after being grounded for something that wasn't your fault.

In these situations, Maddox suggests taking a deep breath and trying to slow things down. “We can get into reacting mode instead of responding,” she says, “and reacting quite unthoughtfully to whatever is being said or done.”
And Maddox suggests softening your tone by imagining you're talking to a friend or boss. With our parents, we lack the kinds of filters we employ when interacting with others, so our words can come off as overly harsh.
